Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What is ACTNow for Mental Health?

We are a non-profit organization dedicated to expanding access to mental health services and support, while fighting mental & behavioral health stigma for all young adults (ages 17-32). We focus on communities that have been historically underserved by the health system including LGBTQIA+ and POC populations, people with physical and/or intellectual disabilities, and people who are uninsured or underinsured.

Which services does ANMH offer?

ANMH offers free one-on-one telehealth therapy and free support groups:

Therapy services: Our licensed mental health providers and social work/counseling students provide online, one-on-one teletherapy treatment. Depending on availability, we try to take your personal preferences and identity into account when pairing you with a mental health provider. ANMH is intended to be a temporary mental health provider; you can expect your teletherapy sessions to last anywhere from several weeks to several months, with some exceptions. Towards the end of your time with ANMH, we will support you in finding longer-term mental health care and other local resources as needed. You will have the opportunity to switch mental health providers if needed.

Support groups: Our support groups are run by licensed mental health providers and social work/counseling students we partner with. We aim to offer at least 1-2 virtual weekly support groups year-round. Support groups are operated on a drop-in basis, where you can come to as many (or as few) sessions as you would like. Some of our support groups have weekly schedules centering a theme (i.e., Queer Support Group). Our mental health providers will provide a safe space to facilitate group conversations. You can expect support groups to be open and welcoming, with fewer than ten people at a time.

Who is eligible to use ANMH services?

For our free therapy services, anyone between the ages of 17-32 years old in the DMV (D.C, Maryland, and Virginia) area is welcome. For our free support groups, anyone over 18 years old from across the U.S. is welcome to join. All services are offered virtually on Zoom.

What happens after I fill out the interest form?

After filling out the interest form, you will receive a confirmation email within 3 business days, letting you know you’ve been assigned a therapist. After being assigned a therapist, expect to hear from your therapist 5-7 business days after your confirmation email. From there, your therapist will help you get set up with telehealth services, and you will work together to discuss frequency, dates, and times that work best for you! The whole process from the time you fill out an interest form to when you first hear from your therapist takes about two weeks, being mindful that during the holidays it may be a few days longer. If you don’t hear from your therapist after two weeks, feel free to reach out via email at info@ahmh.info.

How does ANMH protect my data and privacy?

All personal data used by ANMH is stored in a password-protected, HIPAA-compliant electronic medical record keeping system. This software system undergoes routine updates and maintenance to ensure your private information is being secured with the latest technology.

Do I need insurance?

You do not need insurance – ANMH will not charge you for seeking or receiving mental health care. Having insurance may be helpful if we need to help you get connected to more acute care outside of ANMH, however, you do not need insurance to talk with a therapist.

How can I support the work of ANMH?

You can help advocate for mental health care with your local representatives, learn about issues we support, donate to ANMH, become a partner, join our provider network, and/or volunteer with us.
